Leger test: How to evaluate your aerobic capacity

The Leger test is a method for evaluating aerobic capacity that was first designed and developed in 1980 at the University of Montreal. The test, also known as the “20 meter shuttle run test” consists of a series of runs from one point to another, 20 meters away, at the rate of an acoustic signal that gradually increases in speed. The test ends when the athlete can no longer complete the route before the beep

The Leger test has been used in many scientific studies to evaluate the aerobic capacity of athletes from different sports disciplines and has proven to be a reliable and valid method for evaluating physical fitness. In addition, the Leger test has also been used as a method of evaluating physical fitness in sedentary populations and in individuals with

chronic diseases.

The Leger test score was also used to classify individuals into different fitness categories, such as: poor, mediocre, good and excellent. There are different conversion tables to convert the number of runs completed into an interpretable score, which makes it possible to assess the individual's fitness level and to monitor progress over time

In general, the Leger test score varies depending on the individual's gender, age, and fitness. However, a high score indicates greater aerobic capacity and better fitness, while a low score indicates lower aerobic capacity and worse fitness

The Leger test is a method used to evaluate aerobic capacity and VO2max is one of the most used measures to quantify aerobic capacity.

There are several mathematical formulas used to calculate VO2 max, the most common of which are:

  1. The Astrand-Ryhming formula: VO2 max = (15 x (maximum beats per minute))/(age)

  2. Bruce's formula: VO2 max = (14.8 x weight in kg) + (503 x height in cm) - (69.1 x age) + (sex) where sex = -59.39 for women and 0 for men

  3. The Léger and Lambert formula: VO2 max = 31,025 + (3,238 x average speed) + (0.1536 x average inclination) - (3.9 x age)

  4. The ACSM formula: VO2 max = (15 x (maximum beats per minute))/(age)

These formulas are only estimates and may have margins of error, to obtain a precise measurement of VO2max, specific equipment is used for the maximum oxygen consumption test.
