History of the birth of the Champions League
April 24, 2023 | 2 min of reading

The Champions League or European Cup is the trophy most coveted by major European clubs. The Champions League is not just any cup, but it is 'The Cup', later renamed the Cup with big ears for its unmistakable shape
.It is said that the Champions League was born from a journalistic diatribe between the English press, ready to exalt the exploits of their teams, and the French newspaper L'Equipe, which challenged English soccer to win not only across the Channel but also abroad, taking on the biggest French and European clubs.
In the 1950s, a match was organized between the English of Wolwerhampton and the Hungarians of Honved Budapest, two of the strongest teams of the moment, the British won 3-2 in a comeback. The next day in the British press he had self-proclaimed Wolwerhampton as the strongest team in Europe. The French press immediately responded, pointing out that before declaring the absolute invincibility of the English team, it was appropriate for them to win not only at home, but also in Budapest, and like other teams, they could have deserved the title of World Champions. Hence the idea of launching a great championship among European clubs to elect who was the strongest
