1987 to 2019: A History of the Rugby World Cup Winners

The Rugby World Cup is today one of the three most prestigious sporting events in the world after the soccer World Cup and the Olympics, the world championship event sees the national rugby teams compete for the title of world champion. Since its inauguration in 1987, this competition has given the public memorable victories and epic moments in the world of rugby. New Zealand and South Africa, with three editions apiece, are the national teams to have won the Webb Ellis Cup several times. The only national team in the Northern Hemisphere to have won a world cup was England in 2003

1987 edition: New Zealand

The first Rugby World Cup took place in New Zealand and Australia. The home team, New Zealand, triumphed by beating France 29-9 in the final

1991 edition: Australia

England hosted the tournament in 1991 and won the title, defeating England 12—6 in the Twickenham final.

1995 edition: South Africa

After apartheid, South Africa returned to international rugby competitions. The Springboks won the title in 1995, defeating New Zealand 15-12 in the final at Ellis Park in Johannesburg

1999 edition: Australia

Australia won its second title in 1999, beating France 35-12 in the final in Cardiff. The edition was organized by Wales but several games were played in Paris and London

2003 Edition: England

England won their first and only Rugby World Cup in 2003, beating Australia 20-17 in the final. Australia is the host country

2007 Edition: South Africa

South Africa won its second title in 2007, defeating England 15-6 in the final in Paris. France is the host country

2011 edition: New Zealand

New Zealand regained the title in 2011, beating France 8-7 in the Auckland final. New Zealand the host country for the second time

2015 edition: New Zealand

Once again, New Zealand demonstrated its supremacy by winning the title in 2015, defeating Australia 34-17 in the Twickenham final. For the second time, England was the host country

2019 Edition: South Africa

South Africa won its third title in 2019, defeating England 32-12 in the final in Yokohama. For the first time, the World Cup was hosted by Japan.

The 2023 Rugby World Cup will be hosted by France for the second time.
